Japan flute
Marco Leinhard, a specialist in the Japanese shakuhachi flute as well as taiko drums is joined by koto player Masayo Ishigure in the show "Zen Music of Japan."

Music from a faraway place comes to a convenient location on November 30 as
the World Music Institute presents "Zen Music of Japan" as performed by
Marco Leinhard and Masayo Ishigure at the Washington Square Church.

The instruments played will be exotic, as Leinhard plays the shakuhachi, a
bamboo flute, and Ishigure plays the koto, a 13-stringed plucked zither. The
shakuhachi has a rich history, as it has been associated with religious
practices since the 14th century and has been traditionally used by Zen
monks for meditation.
Leinhard is regarded as a master of the shakuhachi and
has studied with masters Teruo Furuya and Katsuya Yokoyama. He was also a
member of the world-renowned taiko group Ondekoza specializing in Japanese drums for 13 years, playing
more than 500 shows with that group. He has also appeared with the New York
City Opera as a soloist for the American premiere of "Kinkakuji."
Ishigure is
a virtuoso koto performer who studied with masters Tadao and Kazue
Sawai. She has performed all over the world, has been a part of New York's
Bang On A Can Festival, and has appeared in two PBS programs, "Music Under
New York" and "World Of Music." This evening, both musicians will perform
traditional and contemporary works in both solo and duet arrangements.
