Rom holiday
Four groups, including the "Queen of the Gypsies," bring the sounds of Rom music from around the world to New York in Gypsy Caravan 2.

This musical package is a followup to the very successful "Gypsy Caravan"
presentation from 1999. Performing will be four remarkable ensembles
displaying music from the Roma (Gypsy) traditions, tracing the path of
the Roma migration from Asia to Western Europe.

Performing will be Maharaja (formerly known as Musafir), an intriguing group of
musicians and dancers from Rajasthan in northwest India; Esma Redzepova,
known as the "Queen of the Gypsies," who has performed throughout the world
for over forty years (she will be accompanied by Ensemble Teodosievski);
Fanfare Ciocarlia (pictured above), a 10-piece Romanian brass band known for their tempos
and rhythms; and Spain's Antonio El Pipa Flamenco Ensemble, who feature
special guest artist Concha Vargas.
Maharaja are world reknowned for their
exciting blend of Indian folk and popular music, dance and acrobatics. Their
music combines Rajasthani rural folk music with influences from the Muslim
devotional music known as Qawwali, Indian film music and Hindustani (North
Indian classical) music. The group is composed of inhabitants of the Thar
desert in Northwest Rajasthan.
Esma Redzepova is perhaps the most famous
Romani singer in the world and has performed thousands of concerts. She was
the first Balkan Rom musician to achieve success in the commercial non-Rom
world and was the first Macedonian woman to perform on television.
Fanfare Ciocarlia is a Rom brass band from Romania and they've gained worldwide fame
since their 1998 debut on the European festival circuit and the release of
two CDs: "Radio Pascani" and "Baro Biao: World Wide Wedding." They are
mainly known for Romanian Village dance music as well as European and Latin
types of music such as tangos and fox-trots.
Antonio El Pipa and Company
hail from Andalucia, Spain, and are an exciting, traditional flamenco group
and Antonio and his Aunt Juana were featured in the New York stage
production of "Gypsy Passion," which was critically acclaimed.
