Hailing from San Diego, this
group crafts songs that make one think of the open road, lonesome trails
and the kind of heartache that you've just gotta sing about to conquer. Lead
singer Mark Stuart has a voice that's big and rich, a baritone buttery and
pure. When he wails on "Seven Steps" you just may want to grab the nearest
person and do some of that country dancing you've clicked past when it's
been shown on TNN.
Their current CD, "Walk Alone" (on
Ultimatum Music) has
twang aplenty. On "Interstate Cannonball," the band cranks up the pace in a
tune about the highways, and on "Walk Alone," Stuart sounds poignantly
resolute in this declaration of solitude.
Merle Haggard chose these fellers
to be his opening act in 1999 and they won the San Diego Reader's Choice
award for best country band that year as well. The Bastard Sons of Johnny
Cash were also invited by Willie Nelson to play at his famous Fourth of July
picnic. On April 11th they're playing at Rodeo Bar, a fine place to grab some
southwestern grub and a cold one or three (watch out for their powerful
margaritas) and soak up the fine tunes on offer from these California
dudes.
